Alick Hay (SF 62-66) was unanimously elected as Captain for the 2017/18 year at the Annual General Meeting of the Society at the Autumn Meeting on 15th /16th September at Rye, with  John Newton (SH 61-65) being elected as Vice-Captain.  The Hon Treasurer presented the statement of income and expenses (explaining that the surplus, larger than last year, was really a similar small surplus).  The accounts for the year were accepted.  Minutes of the AGM will be posted on the website in due course.

The weather at Rye for the 2017 Autumn Meeting was extremely kind with storms passing either side of the course over the period of play with only a few drops actually falling on the course during Friday afternoon’s round. Our first round on Friday morning was played on the Jubilee Course with its small well manicured greens. After a hearty lunch that offered many their first opportunity to meet old friends and share a drink or two it was time to head out on to the Old Course. With the sun shining as groups set off from the 1st and the 10th tees the Autumn Meeting was well underway even if a few of those playing needed a few holes to get their eye in and their swing working.

The Annual Dinner of the O.R.G.S. in the Club’s Dining Room is unique. No other institution now has a dinner at Rye Golf Club. As a Society we must try and support the 2018 Autumn Meeting and Dinner to ensure that the Club are still willing to host us in years to come. Alick Hay addressed those present after dinner and thanked Members for their support; our Hon. Secretary for the work he does throughout the year and also Jimmy James the Club’s Secretary for his support. Alick concluded by proposing a toast to Rye Golf Club and subsequently Rye’s Captain, Tim Austen gave a wonderful and brief address, concluding by proposing a toast to the Old Rugbeian Golfing Society.

Saturday proved to be another dry day with rain clearly passing either side of the course at times as OR golfers tackled the Old Course in the morning and afternoon. Once again the greens and fairways were a delight to play on and many commented on how amazed they were at just how quiet the Club was considering the magnificent mid-September weather.

Immediately following the fourth and final round of the Autumn Meeting players gathered in the sunshine on the Terrace for the results of two days of wonderful golf. The Autumn Cup, competed for over all four rounds, was won by Patrick Lyons (K 90-95) two points ahead of John Hendry, although the runner-up was declared to be Jamie Plews (SH 88-93) as the Raymond Wills claret jug (best of 3 rounds for those over 55) was won by John Hendry (B 63-68).  The Pattison Memorial prize, score over four rounds plus age was won by Jock Fraser. The various prizes for the individual rounds are shown below.
