Over 102 golfers were present this year at the annual Old Rugbeians match against Rye Golf Club, held over two days in early March and it was lovely to see how well supported this fixture is.
The match as always was keenly contested with the O.R’s getting off to a flying start on the Friday afternoon and leading 6 points to 2 overnight.
However in slightly more blustery conditions on the Saturday the members of Rye with their intimate knowledge of the golf course and greens fought back to win the morning session 5 points to 3points.
After an excellent lunch as always the gap became even narrower and with one pair left out on the course, the scores were tied 11.5points each.
The Old Rugbeians are however very fortunate to have in our last pairing the two most senior playing members of the Society, John Bach and Ted Rose, both at the ripe age of 80 and so with a 160 years of golfing knowledge and skill came out victorious in the final match, making the final score 12.5 points to 11.5 points to the Old Rugbeians.
As one of the O.R. Team noted, Thomas Bjorn should be taking their names down for the Ryder cup re-match with the Americans next year!
A great effort by them and the rest of the team where the half points here and there were critical. Wonderful fun had all round and if we can have as good match next year it will be well worth waiting for.
