On Thursday 4 October the Old Rugbeian Golfing Society visited Blackwell for the first time (if we discount the rained off visit in May). Blackwell is a jewel of a golf club in the heart of the Midlands – close to Bromsgrove but in very beautiful country approached by roads which compete for narrowness with those in Devon & Dorset. It is just the sort of venue which is appropriate for ORGS golf; classy, understated and civilised.
This match was conceived by Nigel Cadbury & myself as a possible catalyst for Midland based ORGS golfers. Unfortunately our first effort to play at Blackwell in May (as per the fixture list) was frustrated by a torrential deluge but our hosts very kindly suggested trying again in October; and this produced a wonderful day’s golf on a great course.
As would be predictable at an unfamiliar course against pretty good golfers, the ORGS team was defeated 4 ½ to 1 ½ over two rounds but this in no way diminished the pleasure. Our heroes who troubled the scorers were Jock Fraser, ebullient as ever, (1 win and a half), David Jackson, making his ORGS debut, (one half) and Richard Caley in the afternoon, (a win). It will be perceived that both Jackson and Caley nobly put up with Fraser’s company.
Those who were less successful were Colin Passmore and Paul Wilson-Gunn (who was burdened with an injured match manager) and myself.
Blackwell’s hospitality is renowned. The day starts with a healthy dose of port & brandy on arrival; attendance at the informal bar after 9 holes is obligatory; and the lunch was delicious and only exceeded in perfection by the quality of the wine. This was and is civilisation at its peak.
Next year the match manager has sacked himself and assigned the role to Paul Wilson-Gunn. The match will revert to May and Nigel Cadbury and Paul will fix a date which will appear in the fixture list and on the website. It is hoped that this will draw Midland based ORGS members (although those who came afar will be pressing too for selection); and that we can play it with teams of at least 8 which was the intention this year.
Unfortunately Rob Prior was not there and I forgot to take any … so there are no photographs. Next time !
