Always a highlight of our Fixtures List, the match against the Lady Vets took place at Piltdown on a perfect late September day. We play annually for a trophy presented by an OR for this match, the Kit Dodds Quaiche, at the time of the match held by the ladies.
The ORGS has not visited Piltdown for some years, and in the meanwhile much work has been done to the course and the greens. Piltdown, while having no bunkers, has many other hazards to negotiate including lots of heather. In our match against the Ladies in 2008, when it was last played at Piltdown, the ORGS were well beaten. Could we do better 10 years on?
After a light lunch in the delightful Piltdown clubhouse, the business of the day began. The match format is foursomes matchplay, although it did not seem quite clear whether the result was to be decided in the normal matchplay manner or on a holes up basis. Sadly, this was not important as the Ladies retained the trophy either 3:2 (matchplay) or 5 up (holes up).
Our thanks to Gerald Cowan (B 55-58) for again organising the day and we look forward to trying again to win the trophy next year.
OR players were Gerald Cowan, Antony Aitken (M 57-62), James Davis (K79-83), Jock Fraser (K 56-60), Christopher Johnson-Gilbert (W 68-73), Robert Lyons (K 56-60), Ted Rose (M49-54) and Tim Watts (St 66-71). John Cuthbertson (K 55-60) had to stand down at the last minute.
