The format of golf played in our annual match against Uppingham is unique, at least it is for the ORGS.
The match is played using the four ball better ball format which, while it is a format now very often played generally in golf, is not played otherwise in the ORGS which remains a foursomes society.
We now play this match, thanks to one of the Uppingham players, at Luffenham Heath in Rutland (near Stamford) and this was played on Wednesday 22nd August. Luffenham Heath is an excellent test of golf, with tree lined fairways (you rarely glimpse players on other holes), well positioned bunkers, sloping fairways and challenging par 3s. It is surprising, on such a course, that both organisers were not flooded with applicants to play. Nevertheless, a select group met for lunch and a great afternoon of golf in warm and breezy weather with the course in excellent condition – dry, running (with some thick rough, the ball sometimes ran too far and found the rough) and excellent greens.
The match overall was a draw, so one win and one loss for Rugby in the two matches that played. Happily Henry Carver who was lent to Uppingham and played well but had to give plenty of shots, did not achieve a win against his old school.
Many thanks to our organiser, Guy Steele-Bodger and to Richard Murmann of Uppingham for making the arrangements with the Club (where he has been a member for over 60 years!).
