Review

There was a modest turnout of 13 quality golfers for the annual encounter between the South West and The Rest at Burnham & Berrow on a cool and breezy Monday.

The course was in superb condition considering the time of year and the greens in particular fast and true. The morning foursomes on the Championship course was a closely fought contest (in most cases) resulting in honours even. Anthony Aitken was widely hailed ‘man of the match’.

After a sustaining lunch and some modest liquid refreshment, the standard of golf on the afternoon ramble on the 9 hole Channel course, perhaps understandably, would not have impressed the selectors. Peter Strother-Smith stole the show as the only golfer to put his ball on the green at the short Par 3 8th hole and won the ‘Kummel’ trophy (which he rejected!)

There is a strong OR membership at Burnham and this means that visitors can benefit from the member-guest green fee rate (currently £35). It would be really good to see a larger gathering next year to enjoy this special course. This year we welcomed Anthony Aitken, Charles Maisey, Guy Steel-Bodger, Tim Stubbs and Charles Walker.
