This inaugural contest between the ORGS and the Old Cliftonians took place at Burnham & Berrow on April Fools’ Day. Because of the severe outbreak of OR golfers at Burnham & Berrow (there are now about 10) and its proximity to Bristol where a number of Cliftonians reside and play golf at Bristol & Clifton GC this match has emerged as a good “fit” and this initial small event proved that that was right; not least because it was played in the most idyllic Spring weather on a course which as ever was in supreme condition.
The match ended in a tie … so there is unfinished business in 2020.
Our top pair, John Roberts and Jock Fraser, were seriously outplayed by two members of the Clifton Governing Body; and the second match, in which we were represented by Christopher Gabbey and Nick Hills, resulted in a half, Hills having in typical fashion squandered the lead on the 18th tee by playing an impeccable lofted extra cover drive into a very distant gorse bush.
So it was left to the worthy Peter Strother-Smith, hitting his own ball because Charles Walker had been stricken by a lurgy in the night, to ensure that we were not disgraced. He duly obliged and won his match.
A cheerful and not very abstemious lunch was taken in the clubhouse and the seeds were further sown for an enduring very jolly fixture. Next year Clifton want to entertain us at Bristol & Clifton and our team will be managed by Peter Strother-Smith who is geographically well placed near Bristol; and this should not be too onerous because of the plethora of ORs who seem to have migrated west and focussed their affection on Burnham & Berrow as a home club.
