The match with the VLGA is always a close run affair and this year proved to be no different. This year we played “away” and consequently were guests of the Ladies at Royal Mid Surrey.

Having learnt a thing or two about batting orders by watching the England cricket team this summer, I sent out the strong pairing of Henry Fox and John Newton first in the hope that they would register an early advantage. They took a while to get up a head of steam, but managed to come all the way back from 4 down, only to be pipped on the green on the 18th.

Andrew Fox (no relation) and Tim Watts proved to be a formidable pairing and having benefited from the rather good lunch, there was no stopping them as they registered our first points with a comfortable victory. This was all the more impressive given the quality of the opposition.

Your captain went out next with a pairing which blended youth (Rob Arthur) with experience (me). We immediately struck up a nice bit of golfing telepathy and if one of us took a breather, the other one kicked in. As a result we came out comfortable winners despite “donating” a number of golf balls to Kew Gardens on the 8th hole.

Our last pairing of Antony Aitken and Charles Maisey were playing against two “Janes” which must have been very confusing. Anyhow they battled hard against some quality golf, but didn’t quite manage to chalk up a win.

So overall, a fair 2 – 2 draw with an entertaining and fun day had by all.
