The first meeting of the 2020 season took place on Saturday 22nd February at Royal Worlington and Newmarket, organised as ever by Peter Mason (SH 49-54). Worlington was in fine condition, the greens were true and fast and the weather kept dry, something of a miracle this winter, although there was a pretty stiff breeze.
The winners of the pre lunch 9 hole foursomes stableford were Toby Davis (Sh 81-86) playing with a local member to make up the numbers; this meant that the prize that would have gone to Toby’s partner was shared by the second place pair of Nigel Turner (SF 62-66) and Tim Watts (St 66-71) ahead of their nearest rivals (Keith Irwin, K 62-66 and David Franks, B 62-66) by 1/4 point.
The afternoon foursomes were individual matches (so no winning team) with stakes of the cost of the lunchtime wine. Our Vice-Captain, Nigel Cadbury (Tu 70-74), responded to the gallery on the 18th green with a long across the green curling putt that just dropped to halve the match for him and his partner, our Captain Charles Maisey (K 65-70) and the adulation of all watching.
It is happy to report that a number of senior members of the ORGS were able to play. In addition to Peter Mason, John Bach (SH 49-54), John Chiene (SF 50-55) and Henry Fox (T52-57) all played and John Trumper (SF 53-57), who has had leg surgery, was able to walk a few holes. Antony Aitken, Robin Budenberg, Grevill Cater, Jamie Clark, Jock Fraser and Richard Lloyd also played and all enjoyed the excellent lunch and being looked after by the Club so very well.
