Review

This wonderful annual fixture resulted in the traditional humiliation of The RGS.

However, nonetheless, a thoroughly enjoyable time was had by all and we received the usual very warm welcome from golfers who have become very good friends. Dinner in the clubhouse was superb; as was lunch on the second day.  This is one of those very sensible matches which comprises an afternoon’s golf followed by dinner and (the next morning) further golf followed by a healthy lunch. A highlight of Royal North Devon is the catering of Mr Royston.

The course was in great condition but our performance doesn’t really benefit from the description. The opposition were too good and our only full point was achieved by a borrowed pair. But some matches were close and they were all good fun. A highlight was Robin Staunton’s drive off the first tee on the first afternoon which finished 25 yards behind where it was hit and ended stymied behind the pump house. Robin’s stupid partner then tried to weave the ball through a gap between the pumphouse and the practice net rather than going back (I mean forward) to the tee with the consequence that for the next 5 minutes Robin & partner were hacking around in the mud short of the river in front of the tee. Not an auspicious first hole.

Poor Colin Passmore had two late drop-outs and rustling up reserves for Royal North Devon which is a long way west is not easy. But Colin (a Churchillian leader) did a fine job in sustaining morale although his taxi booking was not quite as accurate as it might have been – taxis being necessary to convey us to and from the Seagate Hotel in Appledore so as to avoid the vigilance of the North Devon constabulary. The usual jollity took place in the Seagate after dinner …. when the Vice-President made a new friend.

Next year the match management will be divided. Passmore will be in charge of logistics including hotel and taxi booking where he needs more practice; and Hills will be in charge of team raising, pairings and golf. We will be looking for 10 or 12 fit golfers – preferably good enough to trouble the scorers in terms of points. The dates are Tuesday/Wednesday 25 & 26 April 2023. This is a match not to be missed. Apply early !

This year’s team: Colin Passmore, Antony Aitken, Charles Maisey, Jock Fraser, Robin Staunton, Tim Stubbs, Christopher Gabbey, David Jackson & Nick Hills.
