The Rugbeian Golfing Society

Message from the Hon Secretary

The introductory page and the welcome page from our Captain tell you most of what you need to know about the Rugbeian Golfing Society. Our purpose is golf for Rugbeian Golfers who have or would be able to have a handicap if they went through the formalities. It is true that some of the better players within the Society play in the major representative matches (and we hope in the future some will play in their equivalents for lady former pupils), but it is not our purpose just to be a Society for low handicap players.

You will have seen that our usual and preferred form of golf is foursomes. We often play a day of 36 holes of foursomes with a good lunch (at which we invariably wear our Society tie) between rounds. This is also the usual format for our matches against other clubs/schools/societies. But playing with a partner in foursomes does mean that members should have sufficient golfing skills to have a handicap and so not upset their playing partner (well, at least, not upset them too much).

Our various meetings, matches and other events are managed by an individual named in the fixtures list. As Hon Secretary, my role in arranging golf is limited to arranging the Spring and Autumn meetings. In addition, as Hon Secretary and Treasurer, I look after the membership and collect the annual subscriptions. It is easy to join, and I can send you an application form to complete and return to me; or indeed you can do this from this website by completing the boxes below. When I have your application form, I will make contact about setting up the annual subscription (a minimum of £25, but we encourage members to give more). There is only one eligibility criterion: you must have been a pupil at Rugby School or a member of the staff!

The Society will subsidise the cost of the golf at our events for players under 30.

And, finally, there is one more serious point, and it falls to the Hon Secretary to remind all members and potential members of the Society of this point. Many golf clubs are now advising, and sometimes requiring, visitors to be insured.  Tailored policies covering a golfer’s liabilities are available, although it may be that you will find that you are covered against the risks as part of your general household insurance. Having suitable cover is the individual responsibility of each player. The Rugbeian Golfing Society, and its officers, committee and organisers, merely facilitate the ability of the members of the Rugbeian Golfing Society to play golf and accept no liability for what happens when members play at events arranged for Rugbeian Golfing Society members.

I look forward to seeing existing members again soon. Further, the Society and I, look forward very much to welcoming non-member Rugbeian golfers to the Society.
